Exciting Gautrain Ride for Progress Primary Learners

Recently,Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, led 112 Grade 7 learners from Progress Primary School in Lenasia on an educational tour of the Gautrain rail system.

Excited learners embarked on their journey with a Gautrain bus ride from the school to Park Station in central Johannesburg, where they boarded the Gautrain on a high speed trip to Pretoria Central Station.

“I had promised the school earlier this year that we would take the senior learners on an excursion to understand our public transport system,” said Vadi. “The best way to do it was to link the school trip to the celebration of Youth Month. ”

Learners were told how the public transport system works in the province and the links between the Gautrain, Metrorail, and the Rea Vaya and the Gautrain busses.

Each learner was given a personal copy of the award-winning Gautrain booklet entitled,” Sibo on the Move”, which explains how the Gautrain works. The children learned that Gautrain passengers use electronic tickets to pay for train trips and that the train moves at a speed of 160km/h. The travel time between Johannesburg and Pretoria is only 40 minutes.

For many learners this was their first experience of the Gautrain. Some said it was the first time ever that they had sat in a train. They said that the experience was so different and safe compared to the taxis that take them to school every day.

Progress Primary School Principal, Myan Naidoo, said that the learners loved the trip. “For many of them it was their first time on the Gautrain and they couldn’t stop talking about the speed, the cleanliness and the safety of the train. It really opened their eyes to public transport”.

Mr Naidoo thanked the Gautrain team that had facilitated the educational excursion for the learners from his school.

Flamingo’s Mr Daya bows out after three decades

As the saying goes, ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’. Mr Daya of Flamingo Primary School can attest to that adage. When Mr Daya started his career as an educator three decades ago, little did he know the impact that he would make on the community he served.  He never thought that he might produce intellectuals, politicians and business people.

As he bows out, the proud Mr. Daya remembers the day he started as a teacher, as if it were yesterday.

Speaking to the Rising Sun, Mr Daya delved deeper into the time he spent as a teacher and his love of sport.

“I started teaching at the Finetown Primary school in 1980.  I moved to Highveld Primary School in August 1982. In 1992 the two schools combined and became Flamingo Primary School, and I have been here ever since,” said Mr Daya.

Mr Daya also spoke about the importance of education. “Education is one of the key pillars in a person’s life. I am grateful that I have been able to play my role in assisting this community. When we started, a lot of learners were from disadvantaged backgrounds and one can safely say that there has been a huge change in people’s lives today, compared to what it was like then. We used education as a tool to change people’s lives.”

Mr Daya said that he has no regrets regarding his choice of career path. Teaching, to him, was more of a calling than a profession and assisting his community kept him going. Mr Daya said the love he has for sport played a huge role in his life. He stated that education and sport cannot be separated. He said that schools should open their sports facilities to the communities so that they can be utilised for various activities.

He further urged his colleagues to continue with their sterling work and to respect and love their profession. He thanked the teachers, school management and most importantly, his family, for supporting him through the years.

In conclusion, Mr Daya said that his door would be always be open to assist the school with advice whenever the need arose.

Multiserv donated 100 pairs of school shoes to disadvantaged pupils at Apex Primary School and Sharicrest Primary School in Lenasia.

Each school received 50 pairs of school shoes.

“This was part of our Nelson Mandela 100 centenary and Women’s Day commemoration by giving back to the community,” said Ismail Moola of Multiserv.

According to Moola, mothers are primarily responsible for dressing the children, therefore, they have one less item of the school’s uniform to worry about.

“Each school receiving 50 pairs of shoes. This for me warmed my heart because it brought the spirit of sharing,” Moola said.

Speaking to the Rising Sun, community leader Fehme Gani said, “The parents are demanding that GDE (Gauteng Department of Education) senior officials attend to the learners’ problems. They want the classrooms to be cleaned. They also want the school finances to be audited as they want to know how  the school’s money is being spent. We had a similar protest three months ago but nothing has changed. We need transparency as far as the school’s finances are concerned.”

In order to play a meaningful role in the international arena, South Africa needs to invest more in its entrepreneurs. The culture of entrepeneurship can be instilled in South Africans from an early age, something which many schools are doing around the country.

Pentarosa Primary School has joined the drive to produce future business people. The school recently held its Market Day, where learners’ business skills were tested.  With the assistance of their parents and the blessing of the school management, learners set up their stalls in the school grounds.

They sold variety of goodies to fellow learners and judging from the response of some of the up and coming entrepreneurs, one can safely say that the event went well.  Both the organisers and the learners acknowledged the importance of working together to uplift the school.

Speaking to the Rising Sun, Mr. Mkhatswa, a teacher, said that the school wanted to encourage a culture of entrepreneurship instead of dependence. He said that learners were taught beforehand, on how to start a business. This included drawing up a business plan and raising capital. The learners were also taught how to save the money that they generate.  An account has been opened to save all the profits for future endeavours.

Both Mr Radebe and Mr . Shangase, HODs, shared Mr Mkhatswa’s sentiments. They conveyed their appreciation to the learners, the school management and, most importantly, to the parents for being part of the initiative.

Some of the items that were on sale included stationery, jewellery and novelty games.

Food items on sale included chip and dip, chicken pops, pizzas and exotic [?] drinks. One of the learners provided a horse-riding experience for the others, which proved to be a huge hit. All in all, it was a very successful day, as the learners were able to sell their items, earn money and at the same time, have the opportunity to experience a day as an entrepreneur.

Apex Primary principal chases media, members of parliament out of school

What was supposed to be an oversight visit by the Democratic  Alliance  (DA) at  APEX primary school never turned into a shock after the principal asked the media and  the delegates to leave the school  premises. This before they could conduct the oversight, something which the delegates condenmed.

The delegates had to address  the media outside the school premises while the principal was seen leaving the school.

The DA Team One Gauteng Spokesperson for Education, Khume Ramulifho Member of Provincial Legislature said he had been conducting oversights for over ten years and no school had ever denied him access.

He further said that he would escalate what transpired  in order to ensure that what happened did not happen again. The delegates reaffirmed that they would return to the school to perform their duties.

Some of the issues that the team wanted to verify included class overcrowding and the use and the source of income amongst other issues.

Addressing the media outside the school,  Ramulifho said, “We received a series of complaints about the school from parents. They told us that the school is not in a good state and classrooms are overcrowded.  But as part of our responsibility, instead of listening to allegations we decided to visit the school, engage with the principal and find out  whether the school received a budget directly from the department and if so, why they are not maintaining the school and if not how can we assist them. And if the school is overcrowded, do they have enough teachers who can assist the learners”.

Khume added, “But the principal alleged that the district manager said they must not allow the delegates to do oversights. Our job is to ensure that the budget that is approved by the legislature  is properly spent to benefit learners and ensure that teachers are teaching in a conducive environment. I am going to take this matter further, this is unacceptable, public representatives cannot be denied access to the school. What are they hiding and how  are we going to be able to fix the gaps if we cannot do oversight”.

Patrick Atkinson Member of Parliament said, although they are elected by the political party they have a responsibility to all citizens of South Africa . He is adamant that he will come back to the school for an oversight visit.

Ward 9 councillor, Kishore Badal expressed his dissatisfaction in the manner that the school has treated the team.

Nirvana going green

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development started climate change awareness programmes in the province. One of these programmes to raise awareness took place at five schools in Gauteng. Nirvana Secondary was one of the 5 schools.

Grade 11 learners participated in an interactive workshop that informed both students and educators about climate change and how to reduce their “carbon footprints”. A carbon footprint is a calculation of the total greenhouse gas emissions, caused directly and indirectly by an organisation or a company, which contribute to global warming. As part of the “Reducing Carbon Emissions” initiative, eight Nirvana Secondary learners and their educators, Mr.B.Bagas and Ms.M.Lijo, participated in a cycle challenge held at Delta Park last year. On 2 February 2019, the learners who competed in the challenge, were each presented with a bicycle, a crash helmet and accessories. Theses learners will use the bicycles daily as they commute to school. This in turn will help to reduce carbon emissions. Congratulations to Nirvana Secondary learners on their success and on caring for the environment. Every bit counts!

The Maleehah Laylaa Centre offers hope to the hopeless

The Maleehah Laylaa Centre is a beacon of hope to many Lenasians. Since its inception, the school has changed the lives of many children with special needs. It  has given them a second chance and a sense of belonging.

Through the centre, most of the students have learned valuable skills which they could utilize anywhere in the world.  In  order to better equip their learners, the school has added a few new classrooms to their centre.

The upgrading of the centre was made possible by donations from community members. Most of the money was raised at the Fun Walk which was held last year on September 16.  The school has now introduced an early intervention class, for ages 18 months to 6 years. There is also an intermediate class and a skills development class. The school offers speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

Speaking to the Rising Sun, Aadila Moolla said, “ Our centre is based at 339 Bramputra Street in Lenasia Extension 11A . The centre now has two new classrooms, a kitchen and a dining hall. We serve our learners a hot meal every day. At this stage we are still in need of items such as desks, curtains for the kitchen and dining hall, blinds, kitchen units,  a stove, dishes and cutlery. We would  like community members and business people to assist us in acquiring these. We also need to install an Asro Turf on the premises.  Any donation would be welcome.”

Mrs Moolla said that the date for the annual fun walk has been set. “Our annual Fun Walk will be held on September 1, 2019 at the Trade Route Macdonalds. I would like to convey my gratitude to the community which supported us at our previous walk.”

AMS Awards recognises best matrics of 2018

On Sunday, 3 February, the Gauteng and Northern Provinces schools affiliated to the Association of Muslim Schools (AMS), hosted their second special awards ceremony recognising their matric achievers, at the Nur-ul-Islam School Hall in Lenasia. The Guest of Honour was Nkululo Matthews, the Chief Co-ordinator of Independent Schools at the Gauteng Dept. of Education, who said, “I must compliment the Muslim schools’ high standards and the quality of the results achieved. A number of Muslim schools were in the top five independent schools in Gauteng. This augurs well for the schools, the AMS, the learners, the community and for the country as a whole. We congratulate all those who helped the learners achieve marks of such distinction.”

The top student from the 23 Schools (602 learners) that wrote matric, was Yusra Kalla from the Lenasia Muslim School. She scored an outstanding aggregate of 97%. Yusra was also recognised for her best subject performance, scoring 93% for English Home Language and 97% for Afrikaans First Additional Language.

Mikaeel Dindar, from the same school, was placed second with an aggregate of 96%. Both were placed in the first five in Gauteng. Mikaeel scored an impressive 100% for Physical Science and 96% for Life Science.

The 2018 candidate with the most distinctions was Naafia Amod from Auckland Park Academy of Excellence who attained 9 distinctions with an aggregate of 91%.

Taleah Ayob from the Central Islamic School was recognised for achieving 100% in Mathematics and 100% in Accounting.

Other award categories included the top learner from each affiliated school, the learner from each school achieving the highest mark in Islamic Studies, and the special ‘Akhlaaq Award’ where schools honour the learner with the best behaviour.

Suliman Ismail, AMS Gauteng Executive Committee Member, newly appointed principal at Aukland Park Academy of Excellence, and he event’s main co-ordinator, was once again congratulated on organising of the event.

In the keynote address, Qari Ahmed Yusuf Lockhat, AMS National Chairperson from KZN said, “The affiliated, independent Muslim schools once again honoured the best learners. They not only excelled within themselves and their schools, but in every province they stood out as members of the top achieving institutions, producing the best results and maintaining the Islamic ethos. If the history of the Association is taken into account, this is a phenomenal achievement. Well done to all involved in achieving these results.”

Mohammed Dockrat, one of the founders of AMS, was also honoured for his dedication and commitment to the Association. Despite his advanced age, he still contributes to and plays an important role within the AMS structure. “He is an exceptional role model to us all,” said Ebrahim Saloojee, Chairperson of AMS Gauteng and Northern Provinces, who read a profile of the former educationist and who, for the first time, had no comments to make because of his being so emotional at receiving the honour.

Al Baraka Bank sponsored the prizes for the top five learners and Awqaf South Africa donated cash to offset some of the expenses of hosting such an event. Both recognised the achievements of the learners and encouraged them to make meaningful contributions in their communities at large.

Programme director and educator, Imraan Karolia, said, “These learners personify academic excellence. There is no way that they could have achieved such distinction without the dedication and commitment of excellent teachers. The event itself is a motivation for schools, learners and teachers to do more. Nothing is impossible and full marks are not beyond reach.”

AMS officials appealed for contributions towards the AMS EduLoan and Bursary Trust, a project initiated to help aspiring, but needy, young people to follow their dreams, by being awarded bursaries and loans to study further.

The event was broadcast live on CII Radio and iTV Networks.
